If you want to market your book, you should start by creating a marketing plan that will build awareness and motivate people to buy it. As an author, YOU are the brand and the product you sell is you book.
- Identify the Target Reader: The first step is to identify who the typical reader is for your book. Once you know who they are you can identify promotional methods to reach them.
- Create Marketing Materials: You’ll need to create some marketing collateral for the book, such as postcards, bookmarks, poster boards, etc.
- Assemble a Media Kit: Put together a media kit. Inside the kit should be a press release, excerpts from the book, post cards or book cover, your bio with a synopsis of the book, and any book reviews you have had.
- Promote Your Book On and Off-line: Now it’s time to get out and promote the book. Your book marketing plan should include a variety of revenue generating activities; such as speaking, workshops, webinars, and events. Start working on your media list so you can call them to pitch your book or send a press release about the book. Be sure to contact media outlets that your target readers watch or read. Sign up as a Source on https://www.helpareporter.com/, so journalist can contact you for interviews. Book yourself on as many TV and radio shows as you can. Send a copy of your book to an editor and ask them to do a book review to publish in their paper.
- Organize a Book Signing: Through yourself a book signing! Compile a list of your friends, colleagues, and readers of your book and have a book-signing event. During the signing event, you can read excerpts from your book and answer questions from the readers. This will help you boost sales.
- Speak for Free: Contact groups and organizations and ask to speak for free as long as you can have a table set up to sell your books. Be sure your topic would be relevant and interesting to their members.
- Develop a Promotion Schedule: Depending on what your sales goals are, you’ll want to do something every month to promote your book. Sit down and map out a weekly schedule of things you can do to promote your book.
- Develop a Digital Media Presence: Launch a website or landing page and social media pages for your book. Get your book listed on popular online review and selling platforms like GoodReads and Amazon. Use https://www.thunderclap.it/, a social media crowdsourcing tool to create a buzz around your book. These steps will help ensure your book can be easily found online through a google search of the title.
